One alternative to the traditional university degree course is degree apprenticeships and it’s an area that has steadily grown over the last few years since its introduction.
Could degree apprenticeships boom post-pandemic?
We’ve recently seen huge initiatives from the government having an impact on degree apprenticeships. They’ve launched national campaigns to recruit 20,000 additional police officers, all of which will need a degree under new entry requirements put in place in 2020. Additionally, they’ve put funding behind a push to recruit 50,000 additional nurses through an ‘earn and learn’ route. We’ve already seen the impact of this with employers such as Spire Healthcare announcing a recruitment drive, in partnership with the University of Sunderland, to find 270 nurse degree apprentices.
That’s not to mention the growth we’re seeing in other areas including data science and engineering.
So, in addition to the tremendous effort that will be required on student recruitment, you should also consider the recruitment of the staff for these courses.
Finding qualified staff
As well as recruiting all the support staff that go along with running a successful degree apprenticeship programme, including apprenticeship managers, coordinators and internal quality assurers (IQAs) you’ve also got to find your tutors, trainers and assessors. Finding the staff with experience in their relevant field, on the large scale that is required, is a challenge that requires significant time and coordination with the relevant industries.
It will be at the forefront of HR teams at universities and employer providers around the UK as they look to roll out bigger and more expansive programmes to keep up with the demand.
How can you find the talent?
There seems to be a need for significant campaigns to recruit degree apprenticeship delivery staff alongside those that we’re seeing on the apprenticeship side. From targeted social media and engagement to bespoke microsites and advertising across the HE landscape.
It’s most certainly an exciting time of growth for degree apprenticeships and a point of ambition for school leavers, career changers and anyone else that might have been redirected by the pandemic.
