UWE Bristol lends support again to Bristol Pride

For the sixth year, UWE Bristol is sponsoring Bristol Pride, a celebration of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community

The event runs from 3-12 July 2015 and the University will also be the Community Area Partner for Bristol Pride Day on Saturday 11 July.

Bristol Pride 2015 is a special event this year as they work towards supporting EU Green Capital and celebrate being the first ever UK Green Capital Pride. Last year over 30,000 people attended Bristol Pride and they remain the largest free Pride Festival in the UK and a bold celebration of the whole LGBT community.

The week-long festival sees a diverse range of events taking place all over Bristol including a comedy night, theatre with curated performances, LGBT history night and following the success last year, the return of the Pride dog show. The week is also home to the Bristol Pride Film Festival featuring a week of specially selected and award winning LGBT films hosted at the Watershed.

Tracy Willis, VCAB Diversity Champion for LGBT, at UWE Bristol, said: “UWE Bristol is committed to providing a positive experience for all and we are pleased to sponsor Pride for the sixth occasion as part of our unwavering focus on equality and diversity. We recognise that being truly inclusive benefits our students, our staff and everyone we engage with locally, nationally and internationally. We are proud of our diversity and of the accessible, inclusive and welcoming learning community we continue to create. Pride is one of the ways we demonstrate and celebrate this.”

UWE Bristol’s strong commitment to LGBT equality has been recognised in this year’s Top 100 annual Stonewall’s Workplace Equality Index, named number one University for the first time in the rankings. Out of the hundreds of employers surveyed, UWE Bristol also climbed 24 places to 11th spot from 35th position in 2014. The University will also have a presence at the festival itself running a stall and providing volunteers.

Daryn Carter, organiser of Bristol Pride 2015, added: “We are very pleased to again have such overwhelming support for UWE Bristol, both in terms of financial support for Pride but also in helping raise awareness of our events and activities amongst students, staff and Bristol as a whole. UWE Bristol has been a great partner to Pride and has supported our activities since Pride returned to the city in 2010.”
