New educational approaches are everywhere, but only some of them are truly world class. Identifying and rewarding those gems is the mission of the Reimagine Education Awards and Conference, to be held for the first time in London this year (8–10 December).
Co-organised by QS Quacquarelli Symonds and the Wharton School’s Learning Lab, Reimagine Education offers passionate educators – edtech startups, academic faculty, policymakers, investors and educational administrators – a premium forum for driving pedagogical innovation.
With just under 600 million students due to enrol in higher education institutions by 2040, the need to find imaginative, effective ways of expanding tertiary education capacity has never been greater. Continuing to acknowledge and make manifest Reimagine’s founding mission, this year’s conference will be devoted to bringing together educational leaders from across the world to examine the ways in which technology and new educational models – including lifelong learning – can catalyse this expansion.
Any successful models must be based on an enhanced relationship between secondary and tertiary education, especially as questions about college readiness grow ever more pressing. Faculty from institutions including Harvard University, MIT, Caltech, the University of Cambridge, University College London, headteachers of innovative secondary schools and experts from Google, Amazon and IBM will come together to help build bridges between these two constituencies.
With millions of new graduates due to pass through this system in the hope that it will drive their future career and academic successes, such new models will also need to ensure that they prepare students for the changing world of work. Keynote speakers and expert panelists from across the world will also convene to examine – and reimagine – the relationship between education and employability, including Vishal Punwani of Harvard Innovation Labs.
On 8 December, an interactive learning day will take place at Imperial College Business School, including four tracks of workshops aimed at providing educators and edupreneurs with practical, readily implementable takeaways and best practices.
The following two days of the conference will be held at the Queen Elizabeth II Centre. On 9 December the shortlisted entrants to the Reimagine Education Awards will present their work in a series of seven-minute showcases, thematically organised, offering delegates the opportunity to learn about cutting-edge initiatives from across the world.
Attendees will also be able to book a series of speed-dating sessions with Reimagine’s network of experienced edtech investors and CIOs. All sessions will see participants carefully matched according to their preferences, backgrounds and business goals prior to the event.
On 10 December, Reimagine Education will platform inspirational keynote speakers and panelists across three tracks: the first focusing on education technology; the second on new learners and new educational models; and the third on nurturing employability.
Confirmed speakers include Simon Nelson (CEO of FutureLearn), Justin Reich of MIT, Satya Nitta – former program leader at IBM Watson’s Cognitive Learning Content research group – and Neil Morris, dean of digital education at the University of Leeds. Speakers will discuss a range of topics from the future of the humanities, to cultivating student entrepreneurship, to the work being done to enhance MOOC programmes.
The conference will culminate by celebrating those who have done most in 2019 to make this vision a reality: our gala dinner will feature the Reimagine Education Awards’ grand finale, during which the competition’s global winners will be revealed. Previous winners have included Imperial College London, edX, Duolingo, Harvard Medical School, and a range of sector-leading edtech startups.
