Stellar line up for London conference

Programme for Future Proofing Commercial Success Conference revealed by organisers University Hospitality Seminars

Pat McGrath, Chair of UHS commented: ‘We are delighted to be returning to Pinsent Masons in London for the annual UHS conference and we have assembled an exciting stellar line up of speakers.’

The conference, on 4 November 2015, will feature a number of key-note speakers who will cover topical themes that will aid strategic thinking relating to commercial business within the higher education sector.

An eagerly awaited session by Maddalaine Ansell, Chief Executive, University Alliance will focus on the political landscape and what it means to universities in the future.

Maddalaine is well placed to share information in this key area since becoming Chief Executive of the University Alliance in January 2015.

Maddalaine has held a number of appointments including within the Prime Minister’s Delivery Unit, Home Office and BIS. She worked on the HE White Paper for the then Minister for Universities and Science, David Willetts, and was appointed to the position of Deputy Director, International Knowledge and Innovation in 2011.

The conference line up also includes Nick Hillman, Director of Higher Education Policy Institute (HEPI), with a session entitled: ‘The Challenge of Expansion’. Nick will look at the expansion of student numbers and explore how this will impact on the sector and associated services.

Prior to taking up his post, Nick worked for the Rt Hon David Willetts MP, the Minister for Universities and Science, from 2007 until the end of 2013, as Chief of Staff and then Special Adviser in the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills.

He has written for a range of think tanks and journals including a pamphlet on being a special adviser for the Institute of Government and a paper comparing access to selective secondary schools and selective universities for Higher Education Review.

A highlight of the afternoon sessions will be a key note speech by Dr John Hogan, Registrar at Newcastle University where he is responsible for the full range of the University’s professional support services.

Dr Hogan has been the Northern Convenor of the Association of Heads of University Administration and is now the Deputy Chair.  He is Chair of the Editorial Advisory Board of Perspectives: policy and practice in higher education. He also chaired the Russell Group Registrars from 2012-15. He previously served as Treasurer of the Association of University Administrators and as Honorary Secretary to the UK Council for Graduate Education.

The conference will also have an international feel since Steve Cannon, Executive Vice President, The University of Hong Kong will be sharing knowledge on the Asian market and the challenges we all face across the globe. 

Other speakers to be featured during the day include Richard Maccabbee, Director, University of London and Dr Paul Marshall, Group Director of Business Development at University Partnerships Programme.

The conference sessions will be facilitated and introduced by Professor David Russell, The Russell Partnership; one of the UKs leading strategic consultancy companies with a wealth of experience in the higher education sector. The Partnership also provides web based technology solutions for Accommodation and Lifestyle Transition.
