Double winners at CUBO 2015

It was a night of double-winners at this year’s CUBO Awards, held at the University of Liverpool

The University of Aberdeen is the first institution to win two College and University Business Officers (CUBO) awards in one night. Aberdeen picked up awards for the Best Marketing Campaign and for Excellence in Student Sport Experience. There were also double winners of the Lifetime achievement award, won by both Pat McGrath and Frances Stone.

The awards are open to all higher education institutions and to businesses associated with CUBO’s areas of activity. Following its recent £14m refurbishment, The Liverpool Guild of Students provided the stunning setting for the awards dinner. It was founded in 1889 when the University agreed to provide a campus reading room for students.

The University of Liverpool is also the UK’s original ‘red-brick’ university. The term originates from the distinctive red brick Victoria Building designed by Alfred Waterhouse and completed in 1892. Today it has 27,500 registered students as well as more than 6,000 students online.

The awards evening was teamed with this year’s summer conference and exhibition, also held at the University of Liverpool. The theme for this year’s event was ‘change, challenge, opportunity,’ which explored how to harness the challenges we experience to create opportunities, action and impact within our services.

Pat McGrath, Director of Accommodation and Commercial Services, University of Sheffield, said: “There are always one or two stand-out speakers for me at the CUBO Annual Conference and this year’s was Ulrich Winkler and the other was Steve Houghton-Burnett. Both raised some innovative new ideas to leading an organisation in these changing/challenging times but, specifically, with Ulrich I could have listed to him for hours. I thought his grasp of the future was extremely interesting and we need to find out more. However, for me, the most important element of any conference is the networking with both colleagues and exhibitors and this year was no different; I have brought a number of ideas back to my work environment.
