Royal Holloway, University of London (RHUL), has appointed Prof Julie Sanders as its next principal.
The principal designate will take up the post in October 2022 when incumbent Prof Paul Layzell retires after a 12-year tenure.
Prof Sanders is the deputy vice-chancellor and provost at Newcastle University. She is a lecturer in English literature and drama and leads the university’s three faculties and academic strategy. Her academic career began in 1995 with a lectureship at Keele University. Her career included a stint at the University of Nottingham as head of the school of English and a secondment to the university’s Ningbo China campus.
Prof Sanders spoke of her excitement to lead a university that had “undertaken to create a teaching and research community of students and colleagues underpinned by values of inclusion, academic excellence and social justice”. Dame Margaret Hodge led the appointment process as chair of council at Royal Holloway. She said Prof Sanders had “ambitious plans and ideas” and would “continue to grow our reputation for outstanding teaching, world-class research and strong support for our students”.
