One in four UK universities use Occam’s Room Service software to manage their student accommodation. In 2015, Occam launched its mobile friendly student accommodation portal. ASRA 2016 provided an opportunity to explain how customers use this new product.
David Wilkes, Managing Director of Occam, explains “Third generation websites distinguish themselves from previous generations in three ways. Firstly, pages adapt to the device –they are mobile and tablet friendly. Secondly, they display media rich adverts including picture carousels, location maps and floor plans. Thirdly, they are public, so students see this information before they login.”
Occam’s customers are using these features to implement great looking student accommodation websites. Speaking at the workshop in Belfast, David illustrated the power of this new software with case studies, including University of Ulster, University of Leicester, Bradford University and Unilife Ltd.
The timing of this new product couldn’t be better. Universities are reviewing website content following a recent report from the Competition and Markets Authority about student consumer rights. This sets out that terms must be fair, accessible and transparent and what is promised should not be varied. The workshop explored concerns raised by the CMA. “Accommodation providers must review their online booking systems and take action to improve the student experience. Application processes should give a clear indication of room and price, contracts must be saved in a non-editable form, information should be consolidated in a single site rather than spread across too many other pages, and information must be public,’ explains David.
