Students create 24-hour video guide to London

In a unique project, Unite Students has collaborated with students to create a ’24 Hour Student Guide to London’

The guide shows a group of students exploring the capital from dawn ‘til dusk, venturing off the beaten track in search of student budget-friendly activities and sights. The students successfully embarked on their adventure through London for 24 hours, taking in the sights of the capital and unearthing some hidden gems along the way.

Working with digital agency Steak, Unite shortlisted students from around the country and selected the most creative and socially active individuals. The purpose of the first-of-its-kind project was to produce credible, authentic content by students, for students. The project also provided the 12 creative chosen ones with the opportunity to put their talents to the test whilst meeting a group of like-minded students.

The students and Unite team used Twitter, Instagram and blogs to plan their day and engage with local businesses and prospective students. The project was put together after the results of a YouGov survey, commissioned by Unite, showed that around 46% of students will not be considering staying at their university location over the summer months due to a lack of available opportunities.

Giving students the chance to express themselves by producing their own authentic content has resulted in the creation of a unique and practical guide for students and prospective students

The project was shortlisted for a Social Buzz award which celebrates and rewards the very best in social media communications in the UK. The awards are considered among the UK’s most respected and highly coveted in the area of social media marketing by those working in this sector.

John Blanshard, Student Experience Director at Unite Students, said: “Giving students the chance to express themselves by producing their own authentic content has resulted in the creation of a unique and practical guide for students and prospective students. The digital media used by the twelve talented students was ideal to showcase their skills, passions and unique insights. The project has no doubt enhanced their CVs, and is helping to show other students how and where they can spend their time between terms.

“Our aim was to produce some authentic and relevant content which can help students maximise their time and limited budgets. Judging by the overwhelmingly positive feedback and reaction to the guide, we have succeeded in doing just that.”
