Recycling rates will rise in 2014

Recycling rates at UK universities reached record highs in 2013 and show no signs of slowing down says Leafield Environmental

Recycling rates at UK universities reached record highs in 2013 and show no signs of slowing down into the New Year plastics manufacturer Leafield Environmental.

There has been a huge shift in focus on tactics to avoid waste to landfill which includes simpler recycling methods leading to greater reuse of recovered ‘clean’ waste material. These simple steps can drive up recycling rates from 20% to 50% in just a few months.

More than 100 universities and colleges have installed Leafield recycling bins as part of their environmental strategy. Demand for the popular and versatile Envirobin, Meridian and Mini-Meridian multiple waste recycling units is up 125% on last year.

Leafield Managing Director Phil Maddox., “A Waste Not Want Not approach is becoming a way of life for most of most of us and savvy universities are realising the enormous cost savings and income potential from something as straight-forward as installing a more efficient waste management system.

“Sometimes it is as simple as placing two recycling bins next to one general waste (landfill) bin to embed the idea that there should be twice as much waste recycled than before.”

Leafield Environmental: Recycling predictions for 2014

On the up

Food Waste: Food waste came out top as the main priority for nearly 50% of universities and businesses in a recent Leafield survey of environmental managers and this will set the pace for our product design program in 2014.

Bins made from 100% recycled plastic: A zero waste to landfill option for eco-minded universities and colleges who are seeking a totally sustainable solution.

Outdoor Recycling: Orders are already on the up in 2013 by 120% for outdoor recycling units for students in transit around campuses up and down the country. These are set to be even more in demand in the New Year.

Novelty Bins: Novelty bins sales have increased six fold since their launch in January 2013 and are not just for schools. These great characters are delivering the recycling message in university nurseries and crèches too. What a great way to educate the environmentalists of the future.

Tailor-made product design service: In 2013 Leafield designed and manufactured a unique recycling unit with double and triple waste apertures for Greenwich and Coventry Universities and has just completed another bespoke design for installation at Bath Spa University early in 2014.

  • Leafield provides a total recycling solution with numerous base and waste aperture combinations as well as clear labelling and signage, making it easy to install and use our bins straight away.
  • Free consultation, trials and demos available on request
