Professor Andrew Linn joins Westminster

Westminster appoints new Dean of Social Sciences and Humanities

The University of Westminster has appointed Professor Andrew Linn as the new Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities.

In his new role as Dean, Professor Linn will be responsible for providing strategic direction and leadership for the Faculty in order to promote the University’s vision of excellence across learning and teaching, research and knowledge exchange, as well as to enhance its reputation and performance.

Professor Linn joins us from the University of Sheffield, where he was Professor of the History of Linguistics since 2003. He has extensive experience as an academic leader, having served as Head of the Department of English Language and Linguistics at Sheffield between 2004 and 2007, and Director of Research and Innovation in the Arts and Humanities for five years. His research spans a range of fields, such as linguistics, Norwegian language and history, with projects including an investigation of the changing role and status of English across Europe, funded by the Leverhulme Trust.

The extensive academic and research heritage of the University provides an optimal environment to develop new initiatives in both research and teaching

Professor Geoffrey Petts, Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of Westminster, said: “Andrew is joining the Faculty at a pivotal time as we look to strengthen our Social Sciences and Humanities offering and research capabilities. His wealth of expertise in the field will bring refreshing new ideas and approaches that will contribute towards our aims to expand the research opportunities for the University and provide a dynamic and vibrant learning environment for our students as part of our vison for 2020.

Professor Linn said: “The extensive academic and research heritage of the University provides an optimal environment to develop new initiatives in both research and teaching. I look forward to working with my colleagues to build on the strengths of our Faculty and contribute new ideas to achieve the University’s strategic goals.”
