New Deputy VC for UWE

The University of the West of England has appointed Helen Lloyd Wildman as Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Chief Operating Officer

Professor Steve West welcomed Helen’s appointment by saying: “We are very excited that we have secured Helen for the UWE Bristol senior team. She brings a wealth of experience that will prove invaluable to us as we work towards delivery of the 2020 strategy.”

Helen Wildman said: “I am delighted to be appointed to the role of Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Chief Operating Officer at UWE at such an exciting and challenging time.  I have been very impressed with all that I have seen so far and I am really looking forward to becoming part of the team to help drive forward the University’s ambitious objectives.”

Helen has held a number of senior posts in universities and was also a Lieutenant Colonel in the British Army. Helen is moving to UWE Bristol from the University of Wolverhampton where she was University Registrar and Secretary. This post involved overseeing the University’s corporate services and included strategic planning and governance.

Before joining the higher education sector, Helen completed officer training at The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and professional training with the Royal Army Educational Corps. She spent 23 years in the Army and Ministry of Defence, in a variety of roles, reaching the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

Her first posting was teaching soldiers in Germany ahead of their promotion exams and she progressed to Commander, Educational and Training Services, for 10,000 military personnel.

She has also held posts as Research Director at the MOD, Head of PR for the British Forces in Germany and HR Manager at the Army Personnel Centre in Glasgow.

She spent five months in Afghanistan at the outset of operations in 2001 where she was Spokesperson for the International Security and Assistance Force, overseeing press officers from 19 different countries and coordinating the media strategy.

After leaving the Army, Helen became Director of Strategic Planning at De Montfort University. She worked across all departments, ensuring the University’s Strategic Plan became an integral part of day to day work across the University.

She then joined The Open University as Regional Director for the East of England, based in Cambridge. Her role was to raise the profile of the OU in the region, which included being on the regional board of the CBI.

Helen’s first degree was in Library and Information Studies from the former Liverpool Polytechnic. She also has a PGCE, an MBA from Cranfield, an MSc in Strategic Studies from Aberystwyth, and is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development.

The senior team supporting UWE Bristol Vice Chancellor, Professor Steve West, now comprises three women following the recent appointments of Professor Jane Harrington to Deputy Vice Chancellor and Jo Midgley to Pro Vice-Chancellor.
