Dean Spears has been appointed Director of Campus Services for the University of York, starting from 21 May 2018. The role oversees residences, space management, civic engagement, technology development and soft FM, ‘all geared around delivering an outstanding student, staff and visitor campus experience’. He joins York from Sussex.
Dean said: “I am joining York at an exciting time, when it is setting course on a new strategy and development. Many of my values align with those of York, where caring for each individual campus user is so very important.”
“York has a strong reputation as a research-intensive university and I am delighted to be a part of its next chapter as a caring, global leader in higher education.”
Over a career of more than 20 years, Dean has held senior management positions in universities and local government. He remains an active researcher into higher education and participation within ethnography.
At Sussex, amid a broad portfolio, Dean created and led on a civic engagement package aimed at enhancing town-and-gown relations, including a large scale community ambassador project with 21 students contacting 7,000 households at the doorstep annually; an award-winning late night Street Marshaling project helping local residents and students get home safely at night; and contributed to the development of a city-wide student housing strategy.
