The Guardian has today released its annual University Guide, listing 121 UK universities according to various criteria. The top three universities, Cambridge, Oxford, and St. Andrews respectively, have maintained their table-topping ranks, with Oxford and Cambridge swapping places from the 2017 table.
Notable changes in the top 20 include Coventry University, up to 12th place from last year’s 15th, and the University of Bath, which has jumped five rankings to place 5th in this year’s table. Coventry was also crowned Top New University in last month’s Complete University Guide. Vice Chancellor, Professor John Latham, is delighted at the new ranking, saying “This is wonderful news for our staff, for our students, and for the wider Coventry community. We’re proud to be recognised in this way and to be doing our bit to showcase the great strengths and qualities of this city.”
The Guardian University Guide is based on a system of scoring out of 100, with eight criteria including satisfaction with teaching, staff to student ratio, career after 6 months, and spend per student. The top 50 is rounded out with Oxford Brookes climbing from last year’s 57th place, and includes institutions from every country in the UK.

Subject-specific tables also join the main table, with rankings based on individual attainment in specific courses. Some of the most popular courses include Computer Science, topped by Cambridge, Medicine, topped by Oxford, and Design, topped by Dundee.
Recent hikes in tuition fees and living costs for students mean that many applicants and their families are looking out for specific career prospects to be gained from the investment of both finances and time required for academic study. Imperial College London comes out on top in this category, with a score of 89.3/100 in the ‘career after six months’ column.
Students are increasingly looking for a university with a full, well-rounded experience, and as such universities are responding to these requirements with added focus on student satisfaction and available facilities. The Guardian University Guide reflects the total influence of institutions through its comprehensive scoring system.
