Famous alumni lead tributes to University of Brighton graduates

Fatboy Slim and other well-known alumni help to mark what would have been the university’s physical graduation ceremonies next week

High-profile alumni are helping out with online graduation celebrations at The University of Brighton.

The university has produced a series of films for each graduating school featuring messages from celebrity alumni, including Brighton-based musician and DJ Norman Cook, aka Fatboy Slim, artist Alison Lapper MBE, and crime author Peter James.

“We will get together in February 2021 to celebrate at graduation in person,” vice-chancellor Professor Debra Humphris told graduating students. “However, we didn’t want to let this moment pass without saying well done.”

Graduating students will be invited to join the online celebrations, and see each department’s messages, from 28-31 July.

DJ Norman Cook, aka Fatboy Slim

Fatboy Slim, who studied British Studies at what was then Brighton Polytechnic, has quoted David Bowie song ‘Heroes’ in his address to students:

“I, I will be king, you, you will be queen – and nothing will keep them away. We can beat them, just for one day.

“I guess what I’m trying to say is you’re all heroes, whether you get to celebrate with your nearest and dearest or the whole world, what you’ve done is a fabulous thing, I salute you, I congratulate you, you are my heroes – just for one day.”
