Bridget Phillipson becomes shadow education secretary

Former shadow chief secretary to the Treasury replaces Kate Green

Bridget Phillipson has been named the new shadow education secretary.

Phillipson is the MP for Houghton and Sunderland South, a seat she has held since 2010. She served as shadow chief secretary to the Treasury from 2020 to 2021.

In a tweet accepting her new role as part of Labour leader Keir Starmer’s shadow cabinet reshuffle, she paid tribute to the state sector that provided her own education.

Out-going shadow education secretary Kate Green congratulated her “great friend” and said occupying the role of shadow education secretary had been “an honour”.
