Turley drives through Automotive Centre

Planning consultancy Turley secures permission for the National Automotive Innovation Centre at Warwick Uni from Coventry City Council

The NAIC is a £100m joint venture between Warwick Manufacturing Group at the University of Warwick, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) and Tata Motors. It will be a focus for automotive research, combining expertise from industry, the university’s own world-leading academics and companies from the supply chain, supporting advances in technology to reduce dependency on fossil fuels and vehicle emissions.

When fully occupied, the 30,000sqm NAIC will employ over 1,000 people, including many from JLR and Tata, and provide opportunities for apprentice training in tandem with the new Academy for Young Engineers, which is due to open in autumn 2014.

Richard Hutchins, director of JLR Programmes at WMG University of Warwick, said: “This is one of the most significant projects undertaken by the University and quite possibly the largest collaboration between a university and industry anywhere in the UK. The Centre will focus on the long-term challenges identified by the UK Automotive Council and help Coventry, Warwickshire and the UK seal its position at the forefront of sustainable transport research and development.”

Mike Best, executive director at Turley, Birmingham, said: “We have worked with the University of Warwick for over 10 years and this is the largest single project we have delivered. It shows the scale of activity in the higher education sector which we are seeing across the Midlands.”

At the same time, Turley in London has secured a change of use that will allow the University’s Warwick Business School to open its London campus on the 17th floor of the 87-storey Shard on the South Bank. The space will house two lecture theatres of 100 and 60 seats, plus eight seminar rooms and an IT lab, with courses due to start in January 2015.
