Tubular: keeping the international and UK student connected

Today, having access to mobile phone communication is more necessary then ever before

Today, having access to mobile phone communication is more necessary then ever before. The mobile device has become like a best friend and a source of comfort to many. Even more so when we are travelling away from home – our little pocket device can certainly make the world feel a smaller place.

Data is even more of a necessity then making calls or texts. We soon forget how much we rely on data when it is not there for us. Accessing our mobile phones to locate maps, translation websites, book plane tickets or search for things to see and so on.

Then there is the issue of paying for expensive roaming charges when staying in the UK. Finding a preloaded local SIM card can be daunting, costly and takes up valuable time out of any student’s time.

A pioneering young British company Tubular Systems Ltd run by Kevin and his 19-year-old son Jack Egglesden has come up with a solution to make it easier for the international student to gain access to a SIM card. Selling pre-loaded SIM cards from a purpose built, unobtrusive and very contemporary looking self-service system. A system that takes up very little space yet provides a valuable service to any data hungry student.

With Kevin’s wealth of experience in kiosk / vending and Jacks technical expertise they condensed the latest state of the art electronics into a fully functioning SIM card system. This also means that the systems can be adapted to vend many other products.

The system includes nine translation screens to assist non-English speaking students. Accepting credit and debit cards plus Apple and Android contactless pay allows the student instant access to pre-loaded bundled SIM cards.

The use of telemetry is another important part of Tubular’s concept. The data from the telemetry is used to the full – not just to alert when the system needs a re-fill but also to alert the company in the unlikely event of an issue such as a power failure.

Tubular found the addition of a brightly lit top box placed on top of the machine is a great boost to business, enabling it to advertise the systems contents thereby attracting customers.

Tubular Systems works closely with the main mobile phone network operators to provide SIM cards that are already preloaded and bundled with calls, texts and data. This makes the purchasing of a SIM card very easy to understand and helps the student know exactly what they will receive for their money.

One of the best selling SIM packages that they currently offer includes 300 UK call, 3000 UK texts and 12GB UK Data.  The 12GB data allowance can be used in 42 countries meaning the customer can visit Europe, USA or Australia for example whilst still being connected.

In most cases they can offer better bundle packages then those sold in the high street (should you find any pre-loaded SIM card in the high street)

Tubular Systems are seeing a massive (and growing) demand from inbound students searching for a competitive mobile data service. They are the only company in the UK to provide a bespoke SIM card solution to universities. They offer a simple and effective solution to universities interested in generating a new revenue stream, while also offering a useful service the international student.
