Tridonic’s Spennymoor emergency lighting production plant has established a close relationship with Durham University Business School that will allow students to gain a far better understanding of modern manufacturing and management. As a first step Saachi Dayal, a postgraduate student on Durham’s Masters in Management programme is undertaking a three-month project, focussing on the warehouse and supply chain management systems.
Stuart Sloane, Operations Director of the plant, said; “We are delighted to welcome Saachi to Spennymoor and look forward to working with her. This is just the first step in what we hope will be a long and fruitful collaboration where we can provide practical knowledge and experience to the School and its students. I am sure there will be surprises and fresh ideas on both sides that will stimulate innovative approaches to old problems.”
“I am grateful to Tridonic for entrusting in me and providing me such an incredible learning opportunity and exposure. I look forward to working with the team. I am eager to learn from their expertise and experience,” said Saachi Dayal, the first student to benefit from the new arrangements and who started her placement last month.
Dr Manish Shukla, Assistant Professor of Operations Management and Saachi’s supervisor commented; “We are extremely delighted to start this journey with Tridonic. It provides us with new challenges to address and at the same time new relationships to develop. This is a win-win opportunity for all the parties involved.”
This is just one of a series of initiatives and investments that are being implemented by Tridonic as part of a wider programme of investment in young people, be they graduates or apprentices. ‘If companies like ours are not prepared to commit time and resources to help develop the next generation, then British manufacturing will not succeed. We are committed to identifying young talent across various elements of our business. Helping them to develop helps us a company to develop;’ said Richard Strode, Managing Director, Tridonic.
Tridonic’s factory at Spennymoor is the research and manufacturing hub for Tridonic’s full range of emergency products. Every year it produces 4.2 mil units which are shipped to Tridonic’s customers across the globe. The company employs 184 staff, has 7 apprentices and is very forward thinking in its approach to staff development and progression.
