Construction company Stepnell has been appointed by St Catherine’s College, Oxford to undertake refurbishment work totalling £1.2 million for some of its student and academic staff accommodation. Stepnell’s Wantage team began work in January on a project to carry out a programme of internal refurbishment for student accommodation at St Catherine’s House in Bath Street.
Stepnell also began work in November on a separate scheme at a terrace of houses owned by the college in Bath Street. The Bath Street homes are used to provide accommodation for academic staff. Stepnell is demolishing existing extensions to the Bath Street houses and building new extensions at the rear, as well as carrying out internal refurbishment and work to restore and enhance the building frontages.
The St Catherine’s House refurbishment is scheduled for completion in mid-to-late April and the work to the Bath Street houses is due to be finished in May. Both schemes are designed by Purcell Architects.
Thomas Sewell, Stepnell operations and commercial manager, says: “We are extremely pleased to be working with St Catherine’s College on this scheme which will deliver high-specification, modern accommodation through a sensitive refurbishment which is sympathetic to the character of the original buildings.”
Family-owned Stepnell, has a long working relationship with the Oxford colleges, with current projects including the refurbishment and extension of the New Library at Magdalen College.
