Sodexo delivers Integrated Facilities Management at Richmond

Sponsored: Sodexo wins £3.5 million-a-year contract with Richmond, The American International University in London, to deliver all facilities services

This integrated facilities management contract, one of the first of its kind for a UK university, will see the university outsource the management of all of its cleaning, security, catering, reception, helpdesk, grounds maintenance, building maintenance and energy procurement to a single Sodexo team.

Richmond, The American International University in London, is a leading international university with around 1,500 students studying predominantly liberal arts and business studies courses. The University has a very international student population, with an intake from 100 countries. It has 16 buildings in total, with sites predominately in Richmond and Kensington.

Richmond University had worked with Sodexo for nine years as a catering partner. The decision to outsource all its support services was taken by the university to help meet its ambitious growth plans and estates strategy. After also taking on security services across the estate, Sodexo was a natural choice to take on an extended IFM contract covering both soft and hard services.

John Annette, President and Vice-Chancellor at Richmond, said: “As we look to increase our student population and improve our student experience, it is vital that we have the right partner to help us with our estates strategy. We are confident that Sodexo can deliver this professional expertise and insight.”

As part of its strategic plan, Richmond University is looking to improve its physical environment through maintenance and repair, as well as refurbishing University buildings and optimising space.

Annette continued: “Our key priorities are ensuring that space is used more effectively to improve teaching, living and recreation services for students and faculty members, and generating income from under-utilised space, particularly from classrooms and student accommodation in summer months. Sodexo will help us pull together a more cohesive asset-management strategy and ensure that we are focusing resource in the right areas.”

Sodexo will use technology to deliver better visibility and performance management for the University’s asset management, and will bring together suppliers into one reporting structure to create more efficiency. The University will benefit from innovative solutions such as chemical-free cleaning, which delivers a clear environmental benefit.

Tom Laskey, Business Development Director, Universities, Sodexo UK and Ireland, said: “Universities have very complex estates and very distinct requirements in terms of creating excellent student services and experience. Whilst it is quite common for Sodexo to deliver full IFM contracts in the corporate world, or in a healthcare setting, it is still very rare for universities to consider an integrated FM contract because of the nature of their estates.

“Having built a strong relationship with Richmond during the last nine years as a catering supplier, and more recently providing security services, we were able to illustrate our approach and build trust.

“There is enormous potential for us to support Richmond in its strategic objectives, particularly around improving its physical environment and optimising its use of space to meet the changing needs of students, faculty and staff. The mobilisation is going very well and we are really excited to be able to apply the full scope and scale of Sodexo’s IFM capabilities, coupled with our student experience expertise.”

Sodexo has provided catering, accommodation and facilities management services to the higher education sector for nearly 50 years and partners with more than 1,000 universities in 32 countries. In the UK and Ireland Sodexo works with nearly 30 higher education institutions on 50 sites, as a strategic partner focused on improving student experience and quality of life.
