This integrated facilities management contract, one of the first of its kind for a UK university, will see the university outsource the management of all of its cleaning, security, catering, reception, helpdesk, grounds maintenance, building maintenance and energy procurement to a single Sodexo team.
Richmond, The American International University in London, is a leading international university with around 1,500 students studying predominantly liberal arts and business studies courses. The University has a very international student population, with an intake from 100 countries. It has 16 buildings in total, with sites predominately in Richmond and Kensington.
Richmond University had worked with Sodexo for nine years as a catering partner. The decision to outsource all its support services was taken by the university to help meet its ambitious growth plans and estates strategy. After also taking on security services across the estate, Sodexo was a natural choice to take on an extended IFM contract covering both soft and hard services.

As part of its strategic plan, Richmond University is looking to improve its physical environment through maintenance and repair, as well as refurbishing University buildings and optimising space.
Annette continued: “Our key priorities are ensuring that space is used more effectively to improve teaching, living and recreation services for students and faculty members, and generating income from under-utilised space, particularly from classrooms and student accommodation in summer months. Sodexo will help us pull together a more cohesive asset-management strategy and ensure that we are focusing resource in the right areas.”
Sodexo will use technology to deliver better visibility and performance management for the University’s asset management, and will bring together suppliers into one reporting structure to create more efficiency. The University will benefit from innovative solutions such as chemical-free cleaning, which delivers a clear environmental benefit.
