No shortage of hot water for Notts

New sports facilities required a major hot water solution for the University of Nottingham

A £4m development project at the University of Nottingham has seen the construction of two new 800 sqm sports pavilions at the Riverside Sports Complex (formally Grove Farm) adjacent to the River Trent. The new facilities consist of 38 changing rooms, meeting rooms and viewing galleries. The pavilions accommodate teams playing a range of sports including football, cricket, rugby and American football.

Given the large number of matches that can be played simultaneously on the 150 acres of playing field, the showers in the changing room need to be able to cope with a high demand for hot water in a short period of time. Because of this, contractors J Tomlinson chose Hamworthy’s condensing water heaters and wall-hung condensing boilers for the project. “The equipment needed to be able to respond rapidly to demand, as well as meet the strict building regulation standards required for new buildings on energy efficiency,” says J Tomlinson’s senior contracts engineer Stuart Hayward. “Hamworthy’s condensing water heaters fitted the bill.”

The plant room in each building contains two Stratton 100kW wall-hung condensing boilers, four Dorchester DR-FC Evo 120kW condensing water heaters, a 1,000 litre Powerstock storage tank, Chesil pressurisation unit, Burstock expansion vessel and Horton chemical dosing pot, all supplied by Hamworthy Heating.

“We chose to go for multiple units with smaller outputs rather than one or two water heaters with larger continuous outputs so that energy wasn’t wasted when there was only a small demand and there would be sufficient back up if one product was out of use,” adds Stuart.

A remote monitoring unit was installed so that the University of Nottingham facilities management can monitor the gas usage of the equipment from the main campus.
