The formal partnership was signed at an event held at Broadcasting Place by Dr Andrew Platten, Associate Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Environment and Technology at Leeds Metropolitan University – which became Leeds Beckett University on 22 September – and Steve Longhurst, National Framework Development Manager at GB Building Solutions.

Dr Platten commented: “The partnership with GB Building Solutions will provide access to their projects and placement opportunities for our students in the School of Built Environment and Engineering as well as opening up opportunities for research and project development.”

GB Building Solutions are currently undertaking the construction of the £32m, 206-bedroom, 14-storey Hilton Leeds Arena hotel development adjacent to Leeds Met’s Rose Bowl.
Dr Platten added: “This is already an active partnership where our students are gaining access to the new Hilton Leeds Arena hotel development which is adjacent to the University City campus. Activities such as this are underpinned by academic teaching in Construction Management and Quantity Surveying, providing career development opportunities for our students during and after their studies and supporting their professional development.”

Steve Longhurst said: “ The relationship between GB Building Solutions and The University is already working well, we were impressed with the quality of the students’ final year projects earlier in the summer and we are already realising the potential of our hotel development forming a key learning tool in addition to a significant development to the city skyline. This longer term relationship will provide a unique opportunity for us to use our wider project base as a real-life learning platform for as many students as possible.”

Students will be able to take guided tours of the hotel site in the forthcoming year, including presentations delivered as part of student induction week. Additionally, GB Building Solutions will support the development of assignment and project work using the site.
