Harper Adams named University of the Year

Harper Adams University has won University of the Year at the 2016 Whatuni Student Choice Awards

The full league table ranks 125 universities across 10 categories of student satisfaction.

To get the results, Whatuni.com spoke to more than 25,000 university students over the last year to record their opinions and individual ratings.  Universities were considered for an award if they met a minimum threshold of 100, 150, or 200 reviews, depending on the size of institution.

Harper Adams University has not only been awarded University of the Year, but also placed first for Job Prospects and Student Support.  The university also secured a top three finish for Uni Facilities, Accommodation, Student Union, Clubs and Societies, and Course and Lecturers.

Dr David Llewellyn, Vice-Chancellor of Harper Adams University, said: ‘The fact that these awards are based on student reviews is immensely important to us, because they recognise the dedication of everyone at Harper Adams in building a strong academic community that delivers a positive experience for our students. We look forward to celebrating these achievements with our staff and students, and sharing news of our success with those who, across the UK and internationally, work with us and provide much appreciated support for the University.’

Simon Emmett, CEO Whatuni.com, added: ‘Huge congratulations to Harper Adams on their University of the Year award.  Having a top three finish in eight categories and going on to win three of them is a real achievement. Our student reviews, and subsequent rankings, give a real insight into student satisfaction. Our passion and overall goal is to help every student find the right uni.  Our hope is that these accessible and up-to-date reviews will help make one of the most important decisions of a young adult’s life just a little bit easier.’

Current trends

Comparing the 2015 and 2016 rankings, data revealed that for the second year in a row overall student satisfaction has gone up. The average in 2015 was 4.07 (or 81%), this year 4.13 (83%). Four critical areas of student satisfaction have seen significant drops: job prospects, student support, clubs and societies, and student unions.

Regionally, the North East of England has topped each category, achieving an average overall student satisfaction rating of 4.30 (86%). For a second year in a row, London ranked the lowest for overall student satisfaction, and was the only region not to achieve an average of at least 4.0 (80%). Universities with a higher proportion of international students (greater than 20% of the student population) have, for the second year in a row, out performed those with a lower proportion.
