Lambeth College, along with the Shadow Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills, Chuka Umunna and contractor GRAHAM Construction, have celebrated the ‘topping out’ milestone on phase 2 of Lambeth College’s new multi-million pound Learning and Skills Centre in Clapham.
Mr Umunna said: “Adult Skills Funding faces a very serious crisis and I am very worried about the very viability of some other colleges. This Careers College is giving people skills they need to get work and it is why I am such a supporter of what you are doing. In future, people will have maybe two or three career changes and so lifelong learning will be a part of their lives. Adapting to changes in technology, people will have to come back to college again and again throughout their working lives.”
Mark Silverman, Principal at Lambeth College added: “We have been on an amazing journey here at Lambeth College from portacabins with leaky roofs to the first phase of our new buildings which we moved into at the end of last year, to this second phase which is almost the last part of rebuilding Clapham.
“Then we have a new building coming at Brixton and a very exciting scheme being launched this month for Vauxhall. With these facilities, even in challenging times for further education, we are confident we can find more apprentices and people will come because they will see it as worth it for the quality of what we offer them.”
Phase 2 of the £12 million development project will see the expansion and upgrade to the college’s facilities to include new classrooms, a sports hall and gym, as well as a nursery.
Dave Huxley, construction director at GRAHAM Construction added: “When complete, this building will provide a modern, open environment for people to develop and achieve their ambitions in life to the full. It will be a great resource for the whole college, one that better meets their needs and gives them greater access to the tools that will help them train, learn and progress. This is an important milestone and we are now working hard to push through to completion so that students can get through the doors and start making the most of the new facilities.”
Phase 2 of the new site for Lambeth College will be ready for learners to move into early next term.
