The 2015 AGM saw several positions on the executive management committee come to the end of their term. Some of these were filled for a full term and others have been filled on a co-opted or shorter-term basis until the AGM in 2016. So what does this mean for ASRA and the 2016 conference in Belfast? It means we are looking to you and asking members to consider running for a position on the committee. This year will see the positions of Secretary, Conference Office and Training Officer up for election.
There are also several regional rep positions coming to the end of their term next year. Regional reps are elected by the region so if you are interested, why not ask your rep at your next regional meeting or email them about it?
While you are thinking it over, have a quick look at our top tips for those of you who think you would like to get involved:
G: Get Support. Talk to the people you work with and see if they would be supportive of your involvement. You may be pleasantly surprised to find they are a lot more supportive than you think. Seek advice from your line manager. Their support will make all the difference.
E: Encourage. All ASRA members, whether they have been on the committee before or not, should encourage members in their organisation to get involved.
T: Talk it through. Before you talk yourself out of running, talk it through with a colleague. They may be able to help you see the many benefits of getting involved, and maybe give you a confidence boost.
I: Investigate. If you are interested in a position on the committee, why don’t you talk to the person who holds the position or any member of the committee for an insight into the work that gets done?
N: New Ideas. This is the time for you to put forward your ideas to the membership base.
V: Volunteer. All positions on the committee are voluntary. You need to consider this before running.
O: Organise. Read the call for nomination documents when they are circulated and make sure you know what to do to get nominated and when the deadline is for your nomination.
L: Lobby/campaign/canvass: get talking to other members and let them know you are running.
V: Vote: don’t forget to make sure the voting representative for your organisation is at the AGM to vote.
E: Election. Go for it! Of course it can be daunting putting yourself forward in front of your peers but that doesn’t mean you can’t do it.
D: Don’t stop at election. If you decide that a position is not for you or maybe the election doesn’t go your way, that doesn’t mean it is the end of the road for your involvement.

ASRA is a voluntary body that needs its volunteers and there is more than one way to get involved; talk to your regional rep about hosting a meeting, volunteer to help out at the conference; give a talk at a meeting or conference, or, maybe write an article for ASRA in University Business magazine.
We need you to get involved so that we continue to be there for our members and grow as an organisation. All members will be notified by email in early 2016 about committee positions becoming vacant before the conference in 2016.
