The estate of play

UB Editor Rebecca Paddick looks at the evolution of university estates

In what seems like the blink of an eye winter has gone and we’ve all got a little spring in our step. I love this time of year. I can start to enjoy the longer days and warmer nights and the summer months are now almost in sight. Our annual estates issue is one of my favourites because I get to see some of the amazing projects university estates managers have created over the past year.

And with student expectations growing ever higher, we examine what universities need to do to future-proof their estates and continue to attract the top talent, on page 37.

I also caught up with London South Bank University’s Vice-Chancellor David Phoenix (p.12) who told me that after heavy investment and rapid expansion, LSBU can expect even bigger developments over the months ahead.

Earlier this month, Prime Minister David Cameron announced a referendum on whether Britain should remain in the European Union. While Universities UK has taken a clear and strong pro-European position, what role will universities play in the referendum debate? We’ll be looking at this very closely over the next few months, but we want to hear from you.
