Clegg Construction has started work on a multi-million-pound scheme to create new student accommodation in Nottingham city centre.
The Nottingham-based company is the main build contractor for the transformation of a 1950s office block in Old Market Square.
The £3.3m scheme, for Red Oak Property, will see the upper floors of Norwich Union House in South Parade converted into 88 studio rooms for Nottingham based students. While the ground floor of the six-storey building houses a pub and a bank, part of the first floor and the remaining floors will be completely overhauled to create the new student city living space for the summer of 2017.
The prominent building is a well-known landmark in Nottingham and despite its 1950s exterior it also sits within the historic city conservation quarter.
The Norwich Union site is progressing well and will complete in time for the next intake of students wanting high quality accommodation in the heart of Nottingham – Simon Blackburn, Managing Director of Clegg Construction
Simon Blackburn, Managing Director of Clegg Construction, said: “The Norwich Union site is progressing well and will complete in time for the next intake of students wanting high quality accommodation in the heart of Nottingham.
“Student accommodation remains a primary sector for Clegg Construction, this scheme is one of three similar projects currently being undertaken by our teams.”
Recently a group of Construction Management students from Nottingham Trent University visited the Norwich Union site as part of one of their modules, which included a tour by the site manager and the opportunity to gain an insight into the development.
David Jones, who is course leader of the BSc (Hons) Construction Management course at the university, said: “We’re delighted to have developed a good working relationship between the university and Clegg, which make these kinds of site visits possible. Our ties with Clegg will continue to develop and will lead to more opportunities for students throughout their studies.”
Clegg Construction has a track record of delivering successful projects for the Higher Education sector having recently completed a student accommodation project in Sheffield city centre alongside new teaching and learning buildings for the universities of Nottingham, Aston and Birmingham.
