New Cambridge Student Services Centre gets green light

Planning granted for new Student Services Centre and exam halls at the University of Cambridge

The project, designed by Bennetts Associates, includes a 4,200 m² new build with a 2900m² renovation element of existing listed buildings, which together accommodate a new Student Services Centre, examination halls, a refurbished 250-seat lecture theatre and 580 basement cycle spaces for the wider New Museums Site (NMS).

A number of student support organisations (currently housed in separate buildings), will be brought into one central Cambridge location. The centre will include student engagement and resource areas, an open-plan space for administrative functions and meeting and consultation rooms.

Part of the North Range of Buildings project developed for the University of Cambridge for the NMS in the centre of the city, the project is the second phase of the NMS masterplan to greatly improve the public realm of this important central site.

The project builds on Bennetts Associates’ higher education experience such as the Gateway Buildings at St Antony’s College in Oxford, and the practice’s previous work at the University of Edinburgh (Potterrow Development, 2008) and the University of Aberdeen (Suttie Centre, 2009).
