Falconer Chester Hall has won planning consent to refurbish and extend an unoccupied office building in Southampton, to create 79 contemporary self-contained studios in a smart new student development.
The brickwork of the old offices in Bernard Street will be repaired and refreshed and a new two-storey brick extension will be added.
The current metal frame windows will be replaced with double glazed units to improve the look and thermal performance of the building. Black and grey window surrounds add a contemporary sophistication to the façade and two-storey windows add drama and complete the upper levels.
A central lightwell, running the height of the development into the basement, will ensure good levels of natural light and create additional external amenity space. A gymnasium, reading room, cinema and common room will add to the on-site student facilities.
The building lies in an area characterised by a lively mix of residential, retail and commercial uses, in a variety of architectural styles. It is seen as an upcoming location, in which several planning permissions for residential and student accommodation have been recently granted.
