Part of delivering a first-class education for tomorrow’s world leaders dictates that universities must keep up to date with the latest cutting-edge technology both inside and outside the classroom. At Durham University, the IT department partnered with Software2 and Parallels to build a mobile campus so its students and staff could access all the desktop applications they need to work with from anywhere, on any device – including mobiles and tablets – running any operating system (Windows, MacOS, Android and Linux) and using normal touch gestures.
The IT department at Durham University turned to Software2 and Parallels because it wanted to address an out-of-date situation whereby students had to physically go to one specific location on campus, during opening hours, to access their work applications. The solution needed to ensure security, provide value for money, and be flexible, seamless and easy to use for both IT teams and the 18,700 students and 4,300 staff at the university.
From an IT team’s perspective, the system put in place by Software2 and Parallels is a great solution to have at your fingertips. It reduces costs by centralising application management and minimising IT complexity while making it easier to provide a mobile learning experience for students and staff on any device, anywhere.
Furthermore, when it comes to security, virtual application delivery puts IT in control, enabling admins to protect student and staff data with encryption protocols and advanced filtering. Applications and data resources that are shared and accessed over a mobile network can be saved in a closed-off central server and, by using virtual images, data need never actually leave this server, making it even more secure.
Likewise, when it comes to bring your own devices (BYOD), the Durham team can easily enforce a strict separation between school and personal data with AppsAnywhere and Parallels RAS.
By delivering server-based desktops and applications from a central location, it becomes easy for IT to back up endpoints, deploy and maintain security, and meet compliance regulations. Now that this solution is in place, with everything safely and easily managed by IT from a central dashboard interface, it is easier to secure, scale and maintain the mobile service into the future at Durham University.
By utilising AppsAnywhere’s integration with Parallels RAS, Durham University has improved the student experience by providing a consistent and centralised point of access for any academic app on any device. No longer do students need to go searching for their apps in set computer labs at certain times; now they’re available wherever and whenever they need them, all through AppsAnywhere. This is a textbook case of how a flexible technology solution, built with users and IT teams in mind, can revolutionise the university experience for students and staff.
