Martha is famed as the youngest ever contestant to date when, aged 17, she appeared as a contestant on The Great British Bake Off in 2014. While on the show, Martha managed to make it all the way to the quarter-finals whilst studying for her AS levels.
The event took place at the University’s INOX restaurant and was a resounding success. David McKown Head of Training and Quality at the University of Sheffield commented: ‘We had over 30 competitors and 100 people turned up for a Q&A, a baking demonstration by Martha and the prize giving ceremony’.
“This was a great engagement initiative,” David said, “and it was fascinating to see the baking skills on show from students across a range of different academic subjects at the University.”
The award for student baker of the year was Law student, Eleanor Golton, who was presented and her trophy from Kieran Maxwell, SU President.
Martha said: ‘The carrot cake Eleanor baked was outstanding, with great skills and flavour’.
David McKown added: ‘We plan on hosting another competition next year, since we now have a blueprint for a baking competition and a brand name that is legally allowed’.
