An event set up by UWE Bristol’s Collaborating Centre for Healthy Urban Environments and partners, looks at food issues ahead

Feeding Tomorrow’s City

  • How do we make cities work better to get good food for all?

Tuesday 6 May 2014, At-Bristol, Harbourside

It’s not always obvious, but good Planning is a key ingredient in good food for all. In the past planning decisions have led to cities with out-of-town hypermarkets, flats with cramped kitchens, schools without gardens, producers without markets, and prime farmland paved with tarmac. Cities have become places that make it difficult to get good food for people – and food that is good for the planet. A fresh approach is needed to connect food, health and planning in the urban environment. 

 

With the spotlight on tomorrow’s Bristol City Region, this conference organised by UWE Bristol’s WHO Collaborating Centre for Healthy Urban Environments and the Bristol Health Partners SHINE (Supporting Healthy Inclusive Neighbourhood Environments), in association with F3 Local Food Consultants, Bristol City Council, Bristol Food Policy Council , Sustainable Food Cities Network and BBC Radio 4 will ask questions such as how we: 

  • create food-friendly housing developments?
  • connect ‘peri-urban farmers’ to urban consumers?
  • help small retail food enterprises flourish?
  • promote urban food production?
  • cut waste in the food system?

This conference is part of the Bristol Food Connections Festival from 1-11 May 2014.

Marcus Grant, SHINE co-Director and Deputy Director of WHO Collaborating Centre at UWE Bristol, said, “We are planning to bring together those involved in current action, and those who need to be, from across the UK to stimulate a debate and help people in their quest for food systems that better support local enterprise, population health and a more sustainable future. We are really pleased to be part of the Bristol Food Connections, engaging academic and non-academic audiences with such an important topic and promoting healthy attitudes to food and environment.”

Sheila Dillon, BBC Radio 4 Food programme and Professor Kevin Morgan, University of Cardiff, author of Worlds of Food and The School Food Revolution are two of the confirmed speakers.

There will be workshops with planning experts and innovators such as the Square Food Foundation, Blue Finger Alliance, Stokes Croft Food Waste Initiative and Fareshare South West.

Sustainably sourced lunch and refreshments by award winning @Bristol Catering; with biscuits and desert by The Surplus Supper Club, the ethical catering company ran by Fareshare South West – the charity fighting food poverty and tackling food waste.
