What’s cooking at Aspiring Executive Chefs?
Mark Houghton, Executive Chef at Birmingham Uni, will be one of the presenters at the forthcoming event, designed by University Hospitality Seminars
Aspiring Executive Chefs, set to place from November 6-7 in Sheffield, will offer a small cohort of 16 delegates access to exclusive coaching and mentoring.
With a specific emphasis on the operational challenges within universities, the programme aims to “deliver highly effective coaching techniques to develop essential leadership skills, and provide tools for how to influence others and create beneficial relationships by understanding the needs of individuals and other teams”.
One of the presenters at the event will be Mark Houghton, who has worked in the hospitality industry for more than 30 years. A highlight of his career was working alongside Raymond Blanc at Le Manoir aux Quat‘ Saisons, helping achieve two Michelin stars for the restaurant. His first Chef Des Cuisine post was at the Bear Hotel at Woodstock.
Today, Mark is responsible for all food production across the University of Birmingham campus, providing services for 35,000 students and 7,500 staff. He recently designed the kitchens for a new hotel and conference centre opening on campus next month; the 230 bedrooms and extensive catering have a predicted turnover of £8m, in addition to an annual catering turnover of £13.5m.

Also presenting during the course is Andrew Bennett, Chair of the Craft Guild of Chefs, and associate consultant for University Hospitality Seminars. He, too, has been awarded a Michelin Star, as well as being recognised as ‘Banqueting Chef of The Year’ by the Craft Guild of Chefs. In 2009 he was awarded the MBE for services to the hospitality industry and skills training.
