The University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) bestowed an Honorary Doctorate (Doctor of Science) upon Professor Qingjie Zhang, President of the Wuhan University of Technology (WUT), in recognition of his strategic leadership and academic achievements. Professor Zhang was recently selected as an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Science - the highest honour for a Chinese scientist - and is the Director of the State Key Laboratory of Advanced Technology for Materials Synthesis and Processing, and Chair Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at WUT.

Professor Medwin Hughes, DL, Vice-Chancellor of UWTSD said: “The longstanding partnership between both universities has led to considerable cultural and academic opportunities for staff and students over many years. The establishment of the UWTSD Wuhan Ligong College in Swansea is a significant development in our strategic partnership, which will provide further opportunities for academic collaboration, joint research initiatives as well as opportunities to exchange students.”

Professor Zhang, President of WUT, responded “I am very excited to be awarded UWTSD’s honorary doctorate degree. I firmly believe this is not only an award to me but, more than that, it will encourage further and deeper cooperation and mutual understanding between WUT and UWTSD.

As we all know, the fifth UK-China high level people-to-people dialogue was held in London last month. Chinese Vice Premier Mme Liu Yandong and UK Secretary of State for Health Jeremy Hunt signed a joint statement in which the two sides welcomed improved mobility of young people between our countries through a range of programmes and the cooperation.”

“The longstanding partnership between both universities has led to considerable cultural and academic opportunities for staff and students over many years.'

As part of the celebrations, the University launched a number of research centres which will be established in Swansea in collaboration with WUT:

Overseas Practice and Internship Base of Wuhan University of Technology - part of WUT’s integrated practice and internship programme in China and abroad. The centre will look to develop a practice and internship service to students from WUT and UWTSD, in order to develop an international and integrated practice and internship programme between the two institutions.

Centre for Emergency Management Research - committed to international cooperation in the scientific research of emergency management and academic exchanges between WUT and UWTSD. It is hoped that this centre will be developed into a comprehensive academic organisation which can provide services to governmental decision-making, enterprise development, personnel training and cultural exchange.

It is planned that the Centre for Oriental Arts and Culture Research will:

- Promote the exchange of art and design work among the faculties of both institutions, including exhibitions, academic visits, international conferences, etc

- Build a platform for Sino-British educational resource sharing and undertaking international curricula exchanges

- Establish art and design workshops for students of both institutions

- Jointly developing art and design works and promoting art and culture

The Centre will establish a designated workspace for WUT’s School of Art and Design in order to facilitate the development of joint doctoral research initiatives with UWTSD.
