University of Sheffield stalwart receives MBE

David McKown was given the award for services to hospitality training and catering

The University of Sheffield’s David McKown has been awarded an MBE for services to hospitality training and catering.

McKown, director of University Hospitality Seminars, was presented with the award by Prince Charles at Buckingham Palace on November 7.

“It was an amazing day and humbling to meet other recipients at the investiture,” he said. “Many had done amazing charity work [while others were rewarded for] outstanding sporting achievements and services to the armed forces.”

McKown joined Sheffield University in 1992, founded the annual Skills for Chefs Conference in 1998, and established the UK Young Restaurant Team of the Year competition in 2012.

He became a director of University Hospitality Seminars in 20011, designing, organising and delivering training for staff working in HE institutions across the UK.
