Richmond University at the double

Richmond, The American International University in London, has become the only university authorised to award both UK and US degrees

Richmond, The American International University in London, has announced that it will be able to award UK degrees, having been granted Taught Degree Awarding Powers by the Privy Council. This is in addition to the University’s existing US degree-granting authority. The UK award follows an 18 month review led by the UK Quality Assurance Agency, which maintains standards in UK higher education.

From August 2018, students at the University – which has two campuses in London and offers both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees – will be able to look forward to receiving two degree certificates, as they will be gaining two degrees in one.

The Richmond dual degree is possible because, in addition to being able to award its own degrees in the UK, the University holds US degree-granting authority from the State of Delaware, under accreditation by The Middle States Commission on Higher Education. Richmond is the first university to achieve this combination of US and UK degree-awarding powers.

“Blending the US expectations of a broad curriculum with the British system of specialisation means that our students graduate with a multi-disciplinary knowledge of the world.”

John Annette, President of Richmond, The American International University in London, said: “This is a significant milestone in Richmond’s history. We’re delighted that we can now award our own UK degrees. The dual accreditation in the UK and US offers a unique and international education for students which is an ideal preparation for a range of careers.

“Richmond is a liberal arts university, offering students the breadth of study and induction into a range of disciplines that is the hallmark of the liberal arts tradition. We are the only UK university where all undergraduate degrees can be studied within this framework. Blending the US expectations of a broad curriculum with the British system of specialisation means that our students graduate with a multi-disciplinary knowledge of the world, together with in-depth study in a specific area of interest.”
