Nina Hossain wins Honorary Doctorate from Huddersfield

The Honorary Doctorate of the University for services to the world of media and broadcast journalism goes to Nina Hossain

Posted by Hannah Oakman | June 02, 2015 | People

Nina Hossain is a journalist who has just celebrated 10 years with ITN and who has reported live on some of the biggest events of that decade, including the July 7th London bombings, the 2012 Olympics and the Royal Wedding.

She presents Royal Television Society award-winning programmes for ITV News, including the flagship News at Ten, and for fifteen years has been the face of the evening news in the capital, first with BBC London and now with ITV News London. Nina has also fronted the ITV current affairs programme Exposure.

Over her 20-year career, she has interviewed top politicians including prime ministers and film stars, rock stars and sporting heroes. She lists among her personal favourities groups R.E.M. and Duran Duran, Olympians Lord Coe and Mo Farah, racing driver Lewis Hamilton, actor Patrick Swayze and Mayor of London Boris Johnson. One aspect of her work she really enjoys is meeting “ordinary people doing extraordinary things”, and Nina recently interviewed a British doctor who had just returned from treating Ebola victims in Sierra Leone. For the past two years, she has been a patron for the disabled children’s charity Whizz-Kidz.

While her career has had so many highs, Nina lists her greatest achievement as her family. Her mum and sister still live in Huddersfield, where Nina was born and bred. She attended Newsome High School and Greenhead College. She did her degree at Durham University and a postgraduate degree in Broadcast Journalism in Preston.

Spells at ITV regional news in Carlisle and the BBC in London followed, before Nina joined ITN in 2004. Within months she had met her future husband – who now works for the BBC where they live in Nottinghamshire with their three young children.
