HE dominates Stonewall's top 100 LGBT-inclusive employers

Fifteen higher education institutions based in England and Wales have made the Top 100 Employers list, compiled by LGBT equality charity Stonewall

Cardiff University remains the top performing institution for the third consecutive year at number 14, followed by University of Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan University tied at 16. 

Stonewall’s annual review has this year, for the first time ever, marked employers specifically on trans inclusivity, in addition to their work on lesbian, gay and bi inclusive policies.  

To mark the new trans-inclusive focus of the Top 100, Stonewall has also named Britain’s top trans-inclusive employers, which include Cardiff University, University of Manchester, and Swansea University.  

Cardiff University has included trans-specific education in the medical curriculum, supported an LGBT+ Working Group for staff and students, and committed to building gender-neutral facilities in all new builds and update existing buildings. 

Professor Colin Riordan, Vice-Chancellor at Cardiff University, said: 'The Stonewall Top 100 is one of the key benchmarks we use to ensure the University remains committed to LGBT+ equality. A rise to 14th place, up from 23rd in 2017, is testimony to the dedication and hard work of everyone involved and clearly demonstrates our ongoing commitment to diversity.   

'We are also immensely proud to have been given additional recognition of making it into the Top Trans Employers 2018 and becoming a ‘Stonewall Top Trans Employer’. Despite our success, we are not complacent. We will continue to do all that we can to reinforce our commitment to provide an inclusive, welcoming and productive environment for all staff and students.”

The University of Manchester offered guidance for staff and students who are transitioning, extended their allies programme to include trans specific allies and provided free voice and communication workshops for people identifying as trans. 

Meanwhile over the past year, Swansea University (29) has undertaken developing bespoke guidance on supporting trans staff, embedded LGBT+ equality into all staff and line manager training, alongside building strong links to local LGBT+ community groups. 

The highest new entry to this year’s Index is University of Leicester (44), with Aberstwyth University (56), The University of Essex (59), and University of Wolverhampton (62) also joining the list for the first time. 

Completing the list is University of Sheffield (24), York St. John University (24), De Montfort University (61), Newham College of Further Education (63), and Teesside University (67). 

Earlier this month, Stonewall released research that showed half of trans people have hidden their identity at work for fear of discrimination or abuse and that one in eight trans people have been physically attacked by colleagues or customers in the past year.
