More than 20,000 people were placed on A-level results day, the university admissions service (UCAS), has revealed. Of the total, 14,800 people have been accepted through Clearing at this point, a rise of 4.6% on the same stage last year.

The Clearing acceptances total is made up of 11,180 people placed after applying through the main UCAS scheme, as well as 3,620 who applied directly through Clearing after the 30 June deadline. An additional 8,740 people who applied directly to Clearing are yet to be placed.

The weekend following A level results day is again likely to see high numbers accepted through Clearing – the majority of applicants using Clearing will be placed by the end of today.

There are an additional 134,840 people who applied through the main scheme and are free to be placed in Clearing, down 12% on last year. This number goes down as the number of placed applicants goes up. Some applicants in this unplaced group will not have met their offer conditions, others will have received no offers earlier in the year, and some have chosen not to accept any offers.

The final date for applications this year is 20 September. Applicants can then add Clearing choices until 23 October, if they choose to. Almost 65,000 applicants were placed through Clearing by the end of the 2016 cycle.
