City-wide safety awareness campaign launched by Solent

Southampton Solent University is launching safety awareness campaign, 'Ask for Angela' across the city

Following the success of the campaign in Lincolnshire last year, Solent University, in partnership with the Solent Students’ Union and University of Southampton, Students’ Union, will work with a with a number of bars and venues across the city to continue to improve safety.

Ask for Angela is a safety awareness campaign which encourages people to ask for help, should they find themselves in a difficult or unwanted situation during a night out. Posters are placed on the back of toilet doors or within the toilet spaces of supporting bars and venues advising people that support is available should they need it.

Staff within supporting bars and venues are trained to understand the simple code word, ‘Ask for Angela’ and are on hand to help and support in a manner of ways, including, but not limited to: helping that person into a taxi, removing them to a safe space such as a staff or welfare room, or simply keeping an eye on the situation.

Posters have now been placed in a number of supporting venues across Southampton, including popular student locations, Bedford Place, Oxford Street and Bevois Valley.

Alison Golden, Deputy Head of Student Services at Solent, says: “Students make up a large population of Southampton during term-time, which is why we have primarily targeted venues in popular student locations. However, this is a city-wide campaign and we would encourage anyone in the area to take advantage of this added safety measure, should they need too.

At Solent, we have a number of safety measures already in place, including our HelloUni guide on our website which provides guides to the city and university life, along with some useful safety tips

“At Solent, we have a number of safety measures already in place, including our HelloUni guide on our website which provides guides to the city and university life, along with some useful safety tips. Ask for Angela is another great opportunity to encourage students that help and guidance is available.

“Over the coming months, we will work closely with the Solent Students’ Union and University of Southampton, Students’ Union, along with supporting bars and venues to monitor the response to the campaign.”

Ask for Angela posters can now be found in a number of supporting bars and venues across Southampton including, Junk, Orange Rooms, Buddha Lounge, Tokyo, Sobar, The Edge and Box Bar, Pre Bar, PopWorld, Switch, Union Southampton and Solent SU.

Sam Higman, Vice-President Welfare at the University of Southampton, Students’ Union adds: “We’re really pleased to be working with Solent University on the Ask for Angela scheme and are proud to confirm that the scheme is now fully embedded within our SUSU Union bars.”

Initially launched by Lincolnshire County Council in 2016, Ask for Angela went global with one tweet receiving over 28,000 retweets when it was first shared on Twitter. The campaign has gone on to launch in numerous other locations across the UK, including London.
