£30 million residences for Hull

The University of Hull is to gain more than 550 bed spaces in a major new development on its Cottingham Road campus

GSSArchitecture’s design for a new halls of residence at Hull University has been granted planning approval six months after developing the initial design concepts. The new £30 million development at Hull’s Cottingham Road campus will provide 565 bed spaces, including standard rooms, deluxe rooms and studio flats, together with living/learning spaces and kitchen and social spaces.

Jonathan Hunter, partner-in-charge, said: “GSS is delighted to have secured planning permission for the University of Hull, despite a challenging programme. The whole team has worked well together to produce the necessary detail and to engage in substantial consultations to ensure that the details of the new residencies were fully understood by all parties before the application was lodged with the local authority last November.”

Trudi Vout, director of campus and accommodation services at the University of Hull, said: “The university appreciates the energy that GSS have brought to this project, and their vision, professional approach and flexibility have enabled this excellent design to develop in such a short timeframe. We’re all looking forward to getting this project underway!”

Over recent years GSS has designed and overseen the construction of around 5,500 student bedrooms and this project is a further example of how important university-managed accommodation has become in a university’s offer to prospective students.

The team are now working towards the next stage of the programme in order to complete the residencies so they will be ready for occupation in 2016.

Since winning this project at the University of Hull, GSS has also been appointed onto the consultant framework for Aston University.
