Work begins on Cumbria's College for Nuclear

Work has begun on a multi-million pound hub for the National College for Nuclear, a world-class training facility

Located in the heart of Cumbria at Lakes College, Workington, the northern hub for the National College for Nuclear is one of two purpose-built sites being developed with the aim to train 7,000 people by 2020.

In order to develop the site, which will form part of the Centre of Nuclear Excellence initiative for Cumbria, Seddon is building two laboratories and a preparation room; a project workspace area; six group room facilities; a digital consulting area; two virtual reality suites, and an open reception and heart space learning area with fixed ICT on the ground and first floors, including a café and server area.

Corten and aluminium cladding and curtain walling will be used on the external elevations, with stone cladding in the reception area.

All construction is being completed to a BREEAM Very Good standard.

Chris Nattress, Lakes College Principal, said: “The hub will play a huge role in the future of nuclear, both here in Cumbria, and on a national scale, and Lakes College is proud to be a part of it.”

The Department for Business, Industry and Skills (BIS) invested £15 million in total to create the college at the two sites in Cumbria and Somerset. The southern base will be located at Bridgwater College, Somerset.

Sellafield Ltd and EDF Energy are leading industry input into the college alongside higher education providers, the University of Cumbria and University of Bristol.
