Wasps at Coventry - a management course with a difference

The MA Managing and Leading People course will see Coventry University team up with Wasps to deliver an exciting business curriculum

Wasps are teaming up with Coventry University to launch a new management and leadership degree – the start of a new relationship between the two organisations.

The part-time MA Managing and Leading People course will give students the opportunity to expand their knowledge and learn new management and leadership techniques. Students will be able to learn alongside and observe an elite-level sport organisation at work while they study.

Sessions will start in October, running until May each year, and will be held for four hours on Wednesday evenings at the Ricoh Arena. Students will also have full access to the facilities at Coventry University during the course.

Designed for graduates and existing practitioners, the degree aims to transfer knowledge and skills from sport to develop leadership and management skills in business and the workplace. The intention is to create a learning cohort from multiple industries and backgrounds, to encourage students to share knowledge and experiences and ensure knowledge exchange is fluid, transferring from business to sport.

Combining expert knowledge from senior lecturers at Coventry University and insight from key Wasps personnel, the MA will equip leaders with the skills to get the best out of others.

The course will feature talks from high-profile guest speakers, innovative activities and use of modern technology – moving away from typical ‘talk-and-chalk’ methods of teaching.

Chris Bell, Head of Off-Field Player Development at Wasps, said: “The main aim of this new course is to create a dynamic, unique learning environment that will help to develop the skills necessary to be a good leader and we think that bringing the two organisations together makes a unique offer.

“We’re excited to be working with Coventry University on this, combining their teaching excellence with the capacity that rugby has as a sport to develop leadership skills.

“It will be a course that isn’t completely based in the classroom, using directed activities and featuring talks from a range of guest lecturers taken from various aspects of operations at Wasps to encourage personal and professional development.

“We’re encouraging any graduates - or people with significant industry experience – to register on the course and take advantage of this great opportunity to learn about advanced management and leadership”.

A total of ten modules will be taught across the three years, including a dissertation module in the final year.

Participants will have the choice to opt out annually and still come away with a Postgraduate Certificate or Postgraduate Diploma.

David Pilsbury, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (International Development) at Coventry University, said: “The course itself is very exciting but it is the start of what we hope will be a long-term, mutually-beneficial relationship.

“Wasps is a leading, internationally-renowned organisation, and everyone has been impressed with the impact it has made on Coventry and Warwickshire and the local community.

“We see considerable advantages in working closely together on a number of initiatives and this course is just the start of that.

“We are both organisations that believe in the value of leadership and think that combining those attributes, and giving access to a unique learning environment, is an example of how working together can bring added benefit.”
