The University of Surrey has announced that Professor Eugene Sadler-Smith has been bestowed the prestigious award of Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences.

Professor Sadler-Smith is one of 47 leading social scientists to have been bestowed this honour and joins more than 1,100 eminent academics and practitioners from the public and private sectors whose valuable service to social sciences has been recognised. Through this role, Fellows will help promote social sciences, through high quality research and contributing to informed debates on issues affecting the sector.

Joining the University of Surrey in 2003, Professor Sadler-Smith is a leading figure in the study of Organisational Behaviour, most notably through his work in the fields of behavioural decision and management learning research.

Professor Sadler-Smith said: “I am delighted to have been honoured with this esteemed award and humbled that my contributions to social sciences have been recognised in such a way.

“It is with a mix of pride and modesty that I take this opportunity to acknowledge the support I have received from colleagues at the University of Surrey and beyond over the years in helping me to achieve this prestigious honour.

Professor Ansgar Richter, Dean of Surrey Business School, said “I am thrilled to hear that Professor Sadler-Smith has been awarded such a prestigious accolade.

Eugene has made outstanding contributions to research on decision-making, insight and intuition, the notion of hubris, and learning, and I am pleased that all his hard work has been recognised in this way - Professor Ansgar Richter, Dean of Surrey Business School

Having gained his PhD from the University of Surrey in 1982, Lord O’Neil has since held the position of Chair of Goldman Sachs and Minister of State at the Treasury.

His relationship with Surrey continues, most recently visiting the University speaking to students and academics at the Surrey Business School and he has provided generous funding for a number of academic scholarships.

Professor Roger Goodman, Chair of the Academy of Social Sciences said: “The outstanding contributions of each new Fellow are a testament to the breadth of the social sciences, both in their ability to inform policy for public benefit, as well as in addressing some of our most pressing societal issues.

“The range of expertise of our more than 1,100 eminent Fellows speaks to the Academy’s growing reach as the representative voice of the social science community as a whole.”
