UCISA IG17 Conference kicks off in Bristol

This year's UCISA Infrastructure Conference is taking place 28 - 29 September at the Bristol Marriot Hotel, City Centre

IG17 Agile or Fragile: How flexible is your infrastructure?

As IT professionals in higher education, how readily are we able to change, adapt or enhance our IT infrastructures to match the continually changing and growing needs of our institutions, and still provide ever more distributed and complex IT infrastructures? With the growing shift from on-premise solutions, can cloud based technologies offer us the infrastructure flexibility we require, and DevOps the agility we need?

This year’s Conference aims to help delegates better understand how a more flexible infrastructure can help respond to the requirements of the business, in a more agile way.

For IG17 we have put together a programme that offers a combination of strategic vision, experiences and insight from sector colleagues and industry experts.

Following the welcome address from Adrian Ellison, Associate Pro Vice-Chancellor and Chief Information Officer at the University of West London, the first day of the Conference will continue with the opening keynote Top 10 technology trends and their impact on infrastructure and operations from Phil Dawson, Research VP at Gartner UK Ltd. Following a day of presentations, subject focussed breakout sessions, and partner case studies, Day One closes with the welcome return of our very own Infrastructure Question Time.  With an eclectic mix of panel members a lively debate is expected, and delegates are encouraged to submit their own questions using the hashtag #igconf17

We strive to ensure that our delegates have plenty of opportunity to network and interact with both their peers and solutions providers. The Conference drinks reception and Dinner that round off the first day of IG17 will offer plenty of opportunities for this to take place.

Day Two of IG17 continues with another packed programme, opening with Josh Howlett, Head of Trust and Identity at Jisc. This will be followed by sessions from sector colleagues covering topics such as cyber security, dealing with the fact that the building your main data centre resides in is going to be knocked down, and what it is like Living in the Elastic Cloud.

The closing keynote for the Conference this year will be delivered by Spencer Kelly, the respected technology presenter, computer scientist and presenter on Click, the consumer technology show for BBC World and the BBC News Channel. Things that have melted my mind will be a tour of the world in tech, from the self-proclaimed technology tourist.  How to spot the next big thing, and is it coming out of the US, Korea or India?  Spencer will discuss the ways we will soon be interacting with the world, through screens, robots and AI.

With a wide and varied range of speakers and sessions, the organising committee hope that IG17 will once again be both a rewarding and informative conference.
