Buckinghamshire New University has honoured its former Pro Vice Chancellor and Executive Dean, Prof David Sines CBE, by bestowing him with the status of Emeritus Professor in recognition of his significant commitment to the University over the last five years and the success that the Faculty of Society & Health achieved under his direction.

David is a highly acclaimed figure in the healthcare sector and in 2010 was awarded a CBE for Services to Healthcare in the Queen's Birthday Honours List.

From Addlestone, Surrey, David was amongst a distinguished gathering of individuals being honoured at Bucks New University's graduation ceremonies held at the Wycombe Swan Theatre from 8-12 September.

David said of his award: "I am delighted and honoured to have been bestowed with the prestigious status of Emeritus Professor. It has been most fulfilling to have worked with such a dynamic and enterprising faculty and university team over the past five years. Together we have established a reputation for excellence in educational design and delivery and have been placed at the forefront for innovative healthcare and in the applied social sciences. I look forward to a lifetime of association with Bucks New University."

David retired from his role as Pro Vice-Chancellor and Executive Dean of the Faculty of Society & Health in March this year after five transformational years driving the University's healthcare provision. Since David's leadership began in 2009, Bucks New University has become one of the largest providers for pre-registration nursing education across London, and the Faculty of Society & Health has thrived, attracting major nursing contracts and creating a dedicated healthcare campus in Uxbridge, West London.

This expansion has led to a 40% increase in the Faculty's workforce, and the award of specialist nursing contracts has resulted in the doubling of student numbers on those courses and a 95% employment rate for graduating health and social care students. The University's footprint in North West London has expanded to cover eight of the 31 London boroughs and Thames Valley, positioning it at the forefront of the non-medical healthcare education market in London and the home counties in the Thames Valley.

Prior to joining Bucks New University, David held roles of Executive Dean, Faculty of Health & Social Care at London South Bank University, and Head of School of Health Sciences at the University of Ulster. He gained his PhD in social policy from the University of Southampton in 1993, and has held four Secretary of State appointments to the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and UK Central Council for Nursing, Midwifery and Health Visiting (UKCC). He has been a Governor of three NHS Foundation Trusts in London and held an Honorary Appointment with Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust as Associate Director of Nursing.

David is a Fellow of the Royal College of Nursing (RCN), as well as a non-Executive Director with the Central London Community Healthcare NHS Trust, and an Associate Non-Executive Director with Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust.

Professor Ruth Farwell, Vice-Chancellor of Bucks New University, said: "We are delighted that David Sines has accepted our invitation to be associated with us in this way. We choose our honorary awardees in recognition of their outstanding achievements in their particular fields, and I am sure that he will be an inspiration to the graduating students and to those that will come after them."
