Over 140 of Britain’s leading businesses, business leaders and social enterprises, of all sizes and disciplines, have today been revealed as finalists for the 2016 Lloyds Bank National Business Awards, including five finalists for the Duke of York Award for University Entrepreneurship.

The finalists for this award are:

University of Sheffield

* London South Bank University

* Liverpool John Moores University

Anglia Ruskin University

Royal Agricultural University

The universities up for the award are (from top left, clockwise): Anglia Ruskin, London South Bank University, Royal Agricultural University, Liverpool John Moores and Sheffield University

Recognising the work of universities to encourage and enable entrepreneurial opportunities, this Award will distinguish those doing and delivering most. Designed to inspire and measure university commitment to entrepreneurship, the Award will focus on the next level and quality of enterprise societies, use of alumni entrepreneurs, small business internships and the extent to which the careers service offers start up advice.

Gurpreet Jagpal, Director Research, Enterprise and Innovation at London South Bank University said: "We’re delighted to be one of the National Business Awards finalists. One of our key ambitions as a university is to support all of our students and alumni to achieve their entrepreneurial potential as business owners and as entrepreneurial employees.  This nomination recognises the entrepreneurial support we provide to students and graduates across campus, whether that’s within curricula or through start-up programmes and workshops.  The nomination reflects our collaborative approach to delivering enterprise support, harnessing expertise from across LSBU’s Schools and professional services, and working in partnership with our enterprise societies and SME partners."

The finalists were chosen from the hundreds of businesses that entered or were nominated across 18 award categories. They will now prepare for live presentations to an expert judging panel who will decide the overall winners.

Described as “the Oscars of great British business” by David Cameron, former Prime Minister, this year’s prestigious award ceremony will take place on Tuesday 15th November, at the Grosvenor House, Park Lane, where the winners will be revealed.

Sir Malcolm Grant, said: “It is a real opportunity to showcase to a wide audience the remarkable spirit of entrepreneurship that has developed across the University sector. I will have the privilege of chairing an exceptionally strong panel of judges this year, all of them enthusiastic about the spread of enterprise in UK universities.”

Tom Broughton (above), Programme Director of the National Business Awards said: “This award is a really interesting category; the encouragement of university students to think like an entrepreneur could produce some seriously good business people in years to come, and is something that should be strongly encouraged across academic institutes.”
