Tech over paper for student welcome apps

UK universities are leading the way by using specifically tailored apps provided by mobile app specialists Guidebook

These include two top Scottish universities which will be using apps to welcome students this September provided by the leading mobile app specialist.

The University of Edinburgh and the University of St Andrews have both appointed Guidebook to provide everything a new student needs to know about their first few weeks at university from finding their way around to which lectures and events to attend in a simple, easy-to-use mobile app. Each app has been designed specifically for the two universities’ own unique requirements.

For the University of Edinburgh, Guidebook is helping the university’s induction team to create a student app for the third year running to help provide a cohesive Welcome Week events programme for new students starting in September 2016.

Kristin Sargeant, Student Induction Co-ordinator at the University of Edinburgh comments: “The University is a large institution with over 13,000 new students starting in September and over 800 activities taking place during Welcome Week – so it can be quite overwhelming for new students to figure out what events they need to be at and when. The guide allows us a simple way to pull together all of our events, curricular and extracurricular, into one easy-to-navigate platform that students can access from whatever technology they like.

The University of St Andrews has announced that it will be using a Guidebook app for its student induction programme for the second year running. Guidebook is helping the university to provide a bespoke mobile app to support its comprehensive student orientation programme.

Penny Turnbull, Assistant Director of Student Services at the University of St Andrews added: “For over 600 years the University of St Andrews has established a reputation for being at the forefront of new ideas. We’re delighted by the positive feedback from students who used the app last year, and are determined to position ourselves at the digital forefront as we continue into our seventh century. It makes perfect sense to create an app for 2016 students after last year’s success. It has helped improve the student orientation experience, not to mention the amount of paper we have managed to cut back on.”

Aside from induction weeks, Royal Holloway use a Guidebook mobile app for their open days and Oxford University’s Saïd Business School has been using a mobile app covering all areas of their Executive MBA programme since 2015.  Other universities are already following suit and working on apps for welcome weeks in 2016 and 2017, says Guidebook.

Wayne Morris, Vice-President, International, at Guidebook explains: “I think UK universities are beginning to catch on to the capabilities that a mobile app can provide to smooth the path for student induction by using our apps.”
