Student Housing Company launches industry first app

Student accommodation operator develops software for students to view accommodation

The Student Housing Company has launched an app enabling students to explore The Student Housing Company Southampton residences off-plan, including 3D models of specific rooms showcasing details down to the furniture and décor, all from the marketing suite.

The app also gives detailed location information from an interactive map that shows all the points of interest in the local area. Accessed by touch screen technology from the marketing suite, the app is also being used on an iPad at external student events. A first for the student accommodation sector, the student housing operator worked alongside Pelican Media over five months to create the finished product.

Sarah Linton-Walls, Head of Sales and Marketing at The Student Housing Company, said: “When we launched the marketing suite in Southampton in November we realised we were up against a few challenges, the biggest being that the sites were still being built! We needed some sort of tool that helped us to explain the rooms we wanted to fill, and take the students on a virtual tour of their potential new homes. Working with Pelican Media we were able to create an interactive experience for students to see rooms off plan and select their requirements long before we had a building. As far as we’re aware this is a first for a student operator and we’re really happy with the result.”

As the initial reaction from visitors to the marketing suite proved positive, the student housing operator now intends to roll the system out on the website and use it to assist with the marketing of future residences too.
