Student accommodation survey arrives in Ireland

The National Student Housing Survey has launched in the Republic of Ireland as NSHS Ireland

Posted by Julian Owen | December 22, 2017 | Students

The National Student Housing Survey (NSHS) provides insights into student accommodation and helps providers benchmark their performance against peers.

In 2017, NSHS UK received over 34,000 student responses from over 200 universities and colleges. Since 2007, the survey has revealed shifting student perceptions and attitudes across several key areas such as price, staff, service provision and sense of student community.

The survey data also informs the National Student Housing Awards (NSHA) programme that recognises the best in accommodation provision, based purely on student feedback. In 2018, NSHS Ireland participants will be eligible to win Republic of Ireland awards for Best University Halls, Best Private Halls Provider, Best Customer Service, Best Value for Money and Best Student Community.

Tim Daplyn, Managing Director of Red Brick Research said: “The Irish government’s National Student Accommodation Strategy highlights the importance of the NSHS UK in gathering student feedback and how this helps to shape the development of appropriate student services locally and nationally. With a burgeoning accommodation market and an increasing priority on student feedback, we believe the time is right to bring our sector expertise and insight to the Irish student accommodation market”.

The launch of the survey is opportune, with projected accommodation income from Irish HEIs alone reaching nearly €120 million by 2024. Student numbers are also expected to increase from 167,991 in 2014 to 192,886 by 2024 ,with international students making up a key part of this growth; this will bring its own challenges, with first year room guarantees and high accommodation expectations.

Sarah Jones, Project Manager said: “NSHS Ireland offers a fantastic opportunity for universities and private providers to gain meaningful and cost-effective insights into their accommodation and the wider student living experience. The NSHS also allows for year-on-year benchmarking and wider market intelligence. This year we are also offering NSHS Ireland participants a 50% launch offer on reporting while general participation and entry into the Awards remains free.”

NSHS Ireland is now open for registration and the survey will run between 1st February and 31st May 2018. Register for NSHS Ireland here
